"Actions speak louder than words."
These words will forever be engrained into my mind, courtesy of none other than my own mother, Kathy Bentz.
At the age of 20, Kathy Bentz had lost both of her parents.
The eldest of four sisters, she had to provide and care for them. That is exactly what she did.
Bentz dropped out of school and started working two jobs in order to provide for her younger sisters.
The roadblocks didn't stop there. After having a son, she was left to raise him on her own. Being a single mother wasn't something she had planned for, but that didn't slow her down.
"I didn't really look at it as something that was impossible, I just looked at it as something that needed to be done." Bentz said.
Fast forward 22 years and she is providing for her and her son, Mathew. She was able to put him through private school, while not missing a single sporting event, which was hard because there were a lot of them. She was also able to send her son to a prestigious college, High Point University.
"I don't understand how she endured such circumstances, I don't know what I would've done if I were in her shoes. On top of that she wants no credit or praise for what she accomplished, which is simply astounding." Cindy, Kathy's younger sister, said.
Bentz works as an insurance broker in Maryland, living comfortably, something many wouldn't have envisioned given her circumstances as a young adult.
